Just some pics of Joy

Joy was wearing a cute outfit my Uncle Gene and Aunt Nancy sent her today.

Feeling a little better...

I'm feeling a little better today but I'm still so weak and nauseaus. I'm also sick of being sick. I want to be back to normal again.

I guess it's the flu

Well after not being able to sleep I started feeling worse and worse and finally rather nauseaus. I ended up getting sick. So I guess it isn't hormones or anything but the stomach flu. I'm just praying the girls don't get it or Josh.

Can't sleep

I don't know why but I can't get to sleep tonight. I think my hormones are a little messed up this week. I went from feeling super great on Monday to not so great the last few days. I think I've been doing too much around the house too. It has only been two months since the surgery and I have been cleaning and running around as if it never happened. I guess it was bound to catch up to me. My incision is hurting a little more today too. Emotionally I feel rather moody today. I much prefer to be happy and I was so glad that I was able to find happiness and joy again after the ordeal but today has been a little gloomy. I suppose that just from having a baby it takes a while for your hormones to regulate and I have been through so much more than that.

Anyway, I hate not being able to get to sleep. It is especially hard knowing that no matter what time I finally do get to sleep (if I do) the kids will be up bright and early and need me. Of course worrying about that doesn't help one fall asleep.....

She did it again!

Joy went 13 hours last night. I went in and checked on her in the morning and she was sleeping peacefully and smiling and slept for another hour. I'm shocked, but very happy to have such a good sleeper.

Katie on the other hand has been throwing a fit this morning.

This morning...

Two interesting things happened this morning. First of all Katie decided to get up with the sun at 6 AM and go downstairs and sit in her highchair and wait. She wasn't upset or anything - she was just sitting there patiently waiting for us to wake up and feed her. Very silly.

The other thing is that Joy went 12 and a half hours between feedings. We normally feed her at 6 or 7 pm and then keep her up so we can top her off at around 9 pm and then put her to bed. She starts looking really tired around the 6 or 7pm feeding though and so last night we decided not to keep the poor girl up and let her go to sleep at 6 PM after she ate. We figured we'd be up at 4 AM or so to feed her. Well, she wasn't up. She slept all the way through. She never really wanted to eat much at the 9PM feeding anyway and was getting plenty in her other 4 feedings. I'm very excited that our little baby is sleeping 12 hours before she's even three months old!

Library Books mid-June

This is more of a post to remind me what Katie enjoyed at the library, but I thought it would be fun to post it here anyway:

These are the books Katie has been reading from the library. I'm going to return them today and get new ones so I'll write down here her reactions to them so I know what to borrow again.

Books Katie Checked Out:

If you give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff - Katie loves this one - definitely need to borrow it again - might be good to own

The Two Sillies by Mary Ann Hoberman - Katie also loved this book so I might want to look for others by this author

If you take a mouse to the movies - by Nuumeroff - Katie loved it. Great for Christmastime too.

Where the wild things are by Sendak- No interest in this book right now. Maybe borrow it again later.

Madeline by Bemelmans - She was willing to listen to it but not really too interested right now

If you give a moose a muffin - Numeroff - All the books in this series have been a hit. This one seems like the favorite. I should consider getting this one for our home library - maybe for her birthday.

Books I checked out:

Home Learning Year by Year - By Rebecca Rupp - This looks like a great resource. I looked up many of the recommendations for Katie's age. Definitely check it out again when she is older and perhaps buy if needed later for home schooling.

Fundamentals of Home schooling by Ann Lahrson-Fisher - Check out again when Katie is ready for school

Basic Montessori by David Gettman - Extremely detailed - almost in a weird way. Interesting idea about teaching a child to pour by having two jugs and beans in one and having them pour it from one to the other. Not much else. Don't bother with this one again.

Books I Bought:

The Absolute Best Play Days by Pamela Waterman. This book was recommended on page 11 of the Home Learning book by Rupp. It looked so good and seemed hard to find and I got it used at a great price. Basically it has 52 themes (enough for one for each week of the year) and ideas for books for your child to read, crafts to do, videos to watch, snacks to eat, games to play all based on that weeks theme. I think I'll try to use this with Katie this year. I just need to decide if I'll go through the themes consecutively or pick them in some other way. Then I will need to plan about a week ahead of time so I can get the books from the library and have all the supplies needed. And then maybe invite other kids over to enjoy our theme too. It looks like fun, so this book is a hit. And I found it using the Home Learning book so maybe I'll want to get that book someday.

Little Clones

I cannot believe how much Joy and Katie look alike:

Katie is two months older than Joy in the above pictures but the expression is the same.

The above pictures the two girls are about the same age. Again Katie on left and Joy on the right.
They may look alike but there personalities couldn't be more different. You can tell in pictures even Katie's eyes always are very alert and excited and Joy is usually more relaxed. They are both sweet and special and I'm so glad to have two very unique and perfect little girls.

Hot day

It is blazing here today. I guess it is 108 degrees. We're not used to heat here in Santa Maria. We have no air conditioning so I have all the windows and blinds closed and we're hanging around the house today. Katie (who has continued to live with very little TV) is now watching Backyardagins because it is too hot for her to play outside.

The only good thing about this heat is that Joy gets to wear some warm weather clothes that Katie never got to wear (since she was born in August). She's gone through two outfits today due to a diaper incident. Anyway, I did a quick photoshoot (opening one of the blinds just slightly to let in a little light without too much heat).

Great little sleeper

Joy is such a great little sleeper. She has been doing 10 hour nights now for a while. Last night she went from 9pm to 7am. She didn't actually fall asleep at 9pm but that is when she ate last - it took her about an hour to settle down and go to sleep. Anyway, it feels good to get that kind of sleep again.

Of course little Katie was up at 6:45 roaming the house and calling for "Mommy". Katie has also been doing this thing where she tries to cry like Joy. She runs around yelling "Maaaaaa Maaaaa Maaaaa" like a little lamb. I know it sounds cute - but it isn't. I have to keep a close eye on her too because she has found it fun to color where she shouldn't be coloring. I guess it is just the age.

We have still been mostly TV free here. We watched one little show yesterday while Josh was home for lunch and I had to run and get a few groceries. Katie actually asked me for TV yesterday but I offered to read to her instead and she was thrilled. She still loves the "If you give a moose a muffin" book.

Changing Our Daily Routine

As I start to feel more like myself (will I ever really feel like myself again?) I have decided that it is time for us to make some changes in our daily routine. Throughout the difficult pregnancy, bedrest, and recovery Katie got in the habit of watching almost the entire morning lineup on Playhouse Disney. Then in the afternoon she often needed some quiet rest time and so we would watch some of her other favorite shows then. So the last two mornings the TV had remained OFF. Her Mickey Mouse time will have to be with her stuffed animal Mickey. I have replaced that time with some Classical music experience time. This week we are experiencing Moussorsky's Pictures at an Exibition and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Even Joy can listen to music so it is time for the entire family.

We have also failed to get outside much in the last three or four months. So in the afternoon we have been going outside and flying our Winnie the Pooh kite. Since I'm still not quite up to running, I just walk briskly and I'm only able to get the kite up a little. Katie loves it anyway because she can run around below and play with the tail of the kite. Afternoons are perfect because that is when Joy takes her longest nap.

I went to the library yesterday and got If you Give a Moose a Muffin and I think reading library books will become a regular activity in this house. The first time we sat down with the book we read it three times. It has more words on the page then the board books but not too many that she gets impatient. Anybody have any suggestions on similar books I could find at the library?

So with these little changes I feel like we are living more of the daily life that I would like. I hated having my morning revolve around the television.

Two Months Old Today

My little Joy is two months old today. I love her so much! I bought this little outfit just for her when I was pregnant so I had to put it on her and do a little photoshoot.

Sunday, June 8, 2008

Katie pooped on the potty today! Her mommy and daddy are thrilled! YAY! It was even her idea. Our little girl is growing up. She's been peeing on the potty now about once a day (missing a day here and there) for the last week, but this was a first.

Sunday Pictures

When Katie was a baby we were in the habit of showing off her Sunday dress by taking Sunday pictures. So to continue that tradition here is Joy in her Sunday dress. The dress is from Grandma Ellis and is so cute with little lambs on it and bloomers that match. It had a sweater that goes with it too (not pictured). I realized that in just two short months I've posted a ton of pictures of Joy- but I took so many pictures of Katie that to be fair I have to be snapping that camera constantly. :o) We wouldn't want Katie to have more pictures than Joy. Of course Joy will never catch up because every time I take pictures of her, Katie usually wants hers taken too (with today being the exception).

We had a good day at church today. I found that by letting Katie play with a sticker book I could sit through more of the service --- or I would have been able to if Joy didn't have a poopy diaper that needed changed.
Katie had on a cute dress today too, but she really prefers studio shots to candid shots and wasn't interested in posing at the moment (is the child model union on strike - LOL).

Focusing on Photography again

Yesterday I was able to drive myself to Camera Club. It is the first time I've been out by myself since the day of the hemorrage. The first real outing since several weeks before Joy was born. I couldn't pass it up though beauase a local photographer was showing off his studio and giving instruction on lighting and posing. I learned a lot. Now I can't wait to try it all out. I just need a willing model who can sit up but doesn't run off. hmmmm..... those are hard to find around here.

I'm totally exhausted though. Yesterday I did a photoshoot, went to the doctor and went to the Camera Club. I didn't get home until 10pm. That is waaaaaay past my bedtime (new mommies try to go to sleep as soon as the newborn will allow it). So today I feel sluggish, icky and frustrated.

Even though I feel this way I'm still anxious to get started on some of the new portait photography tips I've learned. Maybe I can convince Josh to be a photography model for me tonight. He might allow it if I let him play his guitar throughout the entire session.

Big Girl Katie

I tried to blog about this yesterday but somehow my post got lost and I was too busy at the time to type it again...

Anyway, Katie has been growing up so much lately. First we had the big girl bed that she is so good about. She sometimes even goes up there to lay down during the day when she is tired. A couple days ago I stopped cutting her PB&J into small bites and cut it into two butterflies. She loved that and has learned to eat it that way. The other big thing she's doing is practically potty training herself. In the last 4 days she's gone pee on the potty 3 times. The last time she asked to go and then went within a few minutes. I'm so proud of her. She needs to be a big girl though because the size 6 diapers hardly fit anymore and I had to buy special big diapers for her nighttime. Anyway, my Katie is growing up and becoming such a wonderful little girl.

Post Operation Appointment

Today I had my post operation appointment. I can't believe it has been 6 weeks since the surgery. I've been home for 5 weeks. I feel so much better now. The best news was my iron level of 12.5. A month ago it was at 8 so that is huge improvement. For my iron I used Floradix Floravital Iron & Herb. It didn't bother my stomach at all and I just took the normal amount and felt a huge difference almost immediately. Very good stuff.

I'm still tired but I think that is just new mommy/ weak from being down so long tiredness rather than anemia.

I'm so happy though. I love my girls so much and I'm so happy to be alive to take care of them. Katie is such a sweet girl. We are having so much fun drawing, playing with sticker books, painting, learning music (she is learning solfege and is so quick to memorize the notes, names and sounds). Katie is talking more and we love to find letters and sing about their sounds. Joy is just a sweetie. I love her so much. She gives me the best smiles and coos. She is my snuggly little girl and I'm so happy to have her. I'm so thankful that God has allowed me to be a mommy and has given me two wonderful girls to love and teach.

Little Photo Shoot from Today

Here are some new pictures I took today of Joy. I used some northern window light.

Saturday Night's Photo Shoot

Saturday I was able to do a photo shoot of Joy. Here are a few of my favorites.

Katie has learned to paint. It is one of those 'Paint with Water' books htat you just dip your brush in plain water and the paper has the paint already on it. Katie had a lot of fun. Now that I have a new video camera I can't decide whether I can capture the event better with still shots or with video.

Nine is so Fine!

Little Joy went 9 hours between feedings last night! So she didn't get up this morning until 6 AM! I am thrilled. I feel great after a full night's sleep. What a perfect night to do it too- it's Sunday and Josh got a full night's sleep.

There has been no 'crying it out' or anything like that. This all comes from having a good schedule during the day. She is up to eating 5 ounces at each feeding. Yesterday she ate every three hours (sometimes I can stretch her to 4 but not yesterday she was hungry). Anyway, I learned about it from this book I picked up for a couple dollars in the clearance bin at the book store. When I read it before having Joy I decided it was useless. Shortly after bringing her home I started searching everywhere for the book thinking maybe there was something to it. I'm glad I did. A full night of sleep is a marvelous thing.
